Optimization of Supply Air Temperature in Data Centers

The goal is to standardize the calculation of electricity savings triggered by optimizing supply air temperature in data centers. By raising the supply air temperature, cooling energy demand can be significantly reduced, taking into account IT equipment specifications and cooling system efficiency improvements.

Requirements

Only measures that meet the requirements of the Energy Ordinance (SR 730.01; EnV) can be credited. The additional requirements for the technical characteristics and for the implementation of the measure are set out in Table 1.

InstallationA separation of the cold- and hot-aisle containment of the racks (e.g. via a raised-floor arrangement) must be in place.
Refrigeration systemThe electricity consumption of the refrigeration system must be determinable using calculation sheets B / Cx.
ImplementationThe replacement and commissioning of the new system must be carried out by a qualified specialist or company.

Proof of compliance

Compliance with the requirements must be demonstrated by the following documents. The documents listed in Table 2 are an integral part of the proof of measure implementation.

  1. 1.The information requirements (PDF format) of the new devices according to the Energy Efficiency Ordinance (Annex 1.14 or Annex 2.11 EnEV) demonstrating the efficiency requirements according to Table 1.
  2. 2.Invoice documents (PDF, PNG or JPEG format)

Calculation Formulas

Stromverbrauch Kälteanlage

EKälte = QKälte / COP × 8760

The electricity consumption of the cooling system results from the cooling capacity divided by the coefficient of performance (COP) multiplied by annual hours.

COP-Verbesserung durch höhere Zulufttemperatur

COPneu = COPalt × (1 + 0.02 × ΔTZuluft)

For each degree Celsius increase in supply air temperature, the COP improves by approximately 2%. This enables more efficient cooling generation.

Annual Electricity Savings

ΔE = PIT × (1/COPvor - 1/COPnach) × 8760

The annual electricity savings result from the IT heat load multiplied by the difference of inverse COP values and annual hours.

Cumulative Electricity Savings

ΔEeco = ΔE × Ns × f

The cumulative electricity savings result from the annual savings multiplied by the standard effective duration and the correction factor.

Part of the EFFEL programme

Standardised measures are one of two measure types in the EFFEL programme (efficiency improvements by electricity suppliers, Art. 46b EnG). They follow a predefined SFOE catalogue with fixed savings values.
