Replacement of Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) Systems
Power Supply
Measure Goal
The goal is to estimate the electricity savings triggered by replacing an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) system with a new and more energy-efficient model.
Examples and Scenarios
Replacement of a VFI type UPS system with a new, more energy-efficient model
Inputs
125 kW Nennleistung, 92% gewichtete Effizienz
Requirements
Only measures that meet the requirements of the Energy Ordinance (SR 730.01; EnV) can be credited. The additional requirements for the technical characteristics and for the implementation of the measure are set out in Table 1.
| Old system | New system | |
|---|---|---|
| UPS type | AC UPS system according to EN IEC 62040-3:2021 with a non-redundant rated electrical power of 50 W to 2000 kW. | |
| - | The new UPS system is of the same type as its predecessor (VFD, VI or VFI). The rated power of the new UPS system must not be higher than that of the old UPS system. The average annual load of the new UPS system is 20 percent higher than its rated electrical power. | |
| Energy efficiency | The new UPS systems must meet a weighted minimum efficiency value that corresponds to the requirements of the Elite category of the EU Code of Conduct (CoC) for the energy efficiency of UPS systems Version 2.0 of 2021 (see Table 2, Annex A1). | |
| Implementation | Planning, installation and commissioning of the new system must be carried out by a qualified specialist / company. | |
| Disposal | The consumption-relevant components of the old devices may not continue to be operated within Switzerland. Proper disposal or export must be demonstrable on request. | |

Calculation Formulas
Creditable Electricity Savings
The creditable electricity savings result from the difference between the annual electricity consumption before and after the renovation, multiplied by the reduction factor (0.75) and the standard effective duration.
Annual Electricity Consumption
The annual electricity consumption of a UPS system is calculated based on the installed power of connected loads, the average annual utilization factor, and the weighted efficiency of the UPS system.
