Optimization of UPS Redundancies in Data Centers
ICT
Measure Goal
The goal is to standardize the calculation of electricity savings triggered by optimizing UPS redundancies (Uninterruptible Power Supply) in data centers, taking into account efficiency improvements through reduction of unnecessary redundancies and improvement of UPS utilization.
Requirements
Only measures that meet the requirements of the Energy Ordinance (SR 730.01; EnV) can be credited. The additional requirements for the technical characteristics and for the implementation of the measure are set out in Table 1.
| Old system | New system | |
|---|---|---|
| Technology | The air/liquid coolers must be equipped with variable speed control. | |
| Installation | At least one air/liquid cooler must be in standby mode for more than 8,000 hours per year. | At least one air/liquid cooler must be permanently additionally integrated into operation. |
| Implementation | Planning, installation and commissioning of the new system must be carried out by a qualified specialist / company. | |
Proof of compliance
Compliance with the requirements must be demonstrated by the following documents. The documents listed in Table 2 are an integral part of the proof of measure implementation.
- 1.Invoice documents (PDF, PNG or JPEG format)
- 2.A report (PDF format) documenting and confirming the implementation of the integration

Calculation Formulas
USV-Verlustleistung
The UPS power loss results from the IT load multiplied by the inverse efficiency minus 1.
Wirkungsgrad in Abhängigkeit der Auslastung
UPS efficiency increases with higher utilization. At optimal utilization (50-80%), the highest efficiency is achieved.
Annual Electricity Savings
The annual electricity savings result from the reduction of UPS losses through better utilization and reduced redundancy.
Cumulative Electricity Savings
The cumulative electricity savings result from the annual savings multiplied by the standard effective duration and the correction factor.
